Make your profile stand out

Your profile is what supervisees and employers read before deciding whether to request an intro call. Everything below is advice rather than a requirement. You can change any of it later under Settings > Profile.

Use a warm, professional photo

The supervisors who get chosen most often have a clear, professional, friendly photo. It is the quickest thing you can fix and it makes the largest difference.

Avoid car selfies, filters, dim lighting, busy backgrounds, casual clothes, and photos cropped so tightly that only your face fits. A plain background and good light are enough.

Choose four to six specialties

Motivo offers a long list of specialties, and it is tempting to select everything you have ever worked with. Four to six is the range that reads best. A short, specific list tells a supervisee what you are known for. A list of thirty tells them nothing.

Name your modalities, even the technical ones

On a client-facing website, terms like cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, or solution-focused brief therapy usually confuse people, so most therapists strip them out.

A supervisor profile is the opposite case. Your audience is other clinicians. Listing the modalities you use tells them what training you have and what you can teach them, which is often the deciding factor.

Write a bio for supervisees, not clients

Resist copying your client-facing bio across. What reassures a therapy client is not what a supervisee needs to know.

Questions worth answering somewhere in your professional summary:

• What drew you to this field?
• Why did you decide to become a supervisor?
• What is your approach to supervision?
• What does a typical session with you look like?
• What do you hope for the next generation of therapists?

You do not need to answer all five. Two or three, answered concretely, beat a paragraph that could describe any supervisor.

Keep the rest current

Licenses, populations, session formats, location, and weekly availability all appear to people browsing the directory, and an out-of-date entry costs you matches. Use Preview public profile under Settings > Profile to check how the page reads.

Why your location is on file

Some state boards require part of a supervisee's supervision to happen face to face. Motivo holds your zip code for that reason: when the team is matching a supervisee who needs in-person time, they look for a supervisor within driving distance.

The public directory itself filters by state, license type, specialty, and modality rather than by distance, so keep your city, state, and zip code accurate and mention in-person availability in your professional summary if you are open to it.
