About us

Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer

Full time • Remote • $160K - $180K

Motivo Health is helping solve the nation’s behavioral health crisis by supporting therapists through the licensure process. Similar to doctors going through residency, therapists must complete two years of supervised experience following graduate school. Historically, these hours had to be completed in person, but the rise of digital health now allows supervision to occur virtually in most states. Motivo partners with over 170 community mental health organizations, treatment centers, digital health companies, and health plans to provide virtual access to quality, vetted clinical supervisors across all 50 states.

We are a fully remote team, so you are welcome to live and work wherever you choose - our only requirement is that you are able to maintain at least a 3-4 hour overlap with the US-Eastern time zone on most days. This overlap is primarily required for a limited number of meetings and ad hoc discussions you’ll have with stakeholders. Even though we’re remote, we love getting together in person and hold off-sites throughout the year.

About the role

Salary: $160,000 - $180,000 per year, commensurate with experience, plus equity.

We are seeking a product-minded software engineer who can serve as one of the technical leaders on our engineering team. This is an excellent role for an engineer who enjoys not only the craft of software, but collaborating directly with stakeholders to ensure we’re building the best possible solutions for our customers. As a technical leader, you'll be diving head-first into exciting projects, honing your skills, and seeing the immediate value of your work. We're eager to onboard someone who is genuinely interested in improving access to mental health care, blending technical skills and product awareness to ensure we provide the best to our customers.

Here's what you can expect as part of the Motivo team:

  • Transparent Leadership and Collaborative Culture: Transparency is key to our culture. We emphasize kindness, humility, and open communication. We hold a weekly all-hands meeting where all employees are encouraged to ask questions directly to leadership about the company's health and strategy. It's our way of ensuring that all members of ourteam have the information they need to understand our direction and contribute to our goals.
  • Career Progression and Regular Performance Reviews: We recognize the importance of professional growth and career progression. At Motivo, we conduct regular performance reviews, following a clear career ladder. We are committed to offering the team member in this role the opportunity to advance within the organization and work towards a staff engineer title.
  • Work-Life Balance: Our team operates fully remotely within the United States. We offer the flexibility to work from wherever you are comfortable and maintain a healthy work-life balance. We value output over hours spent at a computer, and we measure success based on the quality and impact of the work you produce.

We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Employer-subsidized medical, vision, and dental benefits for US-based employees
  • Self-care, professional development, and remote work stipends
  • A company-provided Apple laptop
  • Unlimited PTO within reason, with a mandatory PTO minimum

This role might not be a good fit for you if...

While we're enthusiastic about our work and proud of our team culture, we understand that our specific work environment and this role may not be the right fit for everyone! We encourage applicants to reflect on what they want before applying – consider whether:

You prefer a heavily structured environment: At Motivo, we value autonomy and trust our team to take ownership of their tasks. This means we don't provide detailed specifications for every task. If you thrive in a highly structured environment with a predetermined roadmap, this role might not be a suitable match for you.

You're not interested in end-to-end ownership: Our engineers often work on projects from concept to deployment to support. This requires a proactive attitude and a willingness to handle various tasks outside of the conventional software engineer's role. If you prefer to work solely within a specific niche, this role may not align with your preferences.

You don't have an interest in mental health or the healthcare industry: While you don't need to be an expert in mental health or healthcare, a genuine interest in the industry will be critical for this role. Our goal is to improve access to mental health care, and we seek team members who align with this mission.

You're seeking a management or leadership role: This role is for an individual contributor (IC). It’s certainly possible for the team to grow in a way such that there will be a need for management down the line, but that’s not something we can guarantee. If you're looking to move into a management or leadership role in the near future, this position may not align with your career goals.

You prefer minimal stakeholder interaction: Our engineers regularly interact with stakeholders and occasionally directly with customers to better understand their needs. If you prefer roles where engineers are isolated from product decisions and customer feedback, this position might not be a good fit.

Tech stack

Our tech stack consists of:

  • Frontend: React, Material UI, Apollo Client
  • Backend: Node.js in TypeScript, Express, Objection JS, Apollo Server
  • Database: PostgreSQL on Google Cloud SQL
  • Infrastructure: Docker-containerized apps running on Cloud Run, App Engine in Google Cloud Platform, deployed via Github Actions and Google Cloud Build

We're looking for someone who is excited to work with these technologies and has a demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies as needed.

Who you are

Must-haves

  • 5+ years of professional experience with a Single Page App framework (e.g. React, Vue, Angular) built using modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • 5+ years of professional experience shipping scalable web backends (e.g., Flask, Django, Rails, Express, though experience with Node.js-based frameworks is preferred).
  • Proven expertise in integrating 3rd-party APIs (e.g., Zoom, Stripe, Auth0).
  • Proven expertise in optimizing performance across the entire stack.
  • Proficiency in writing SQL queries for basic business analytics and reporting needs.
  • Proven track record in blending product and engineering, with a keen focus on user experience.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and providing guidance on best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, able to adapt the level of technical detail to the appropriate audience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Extensive experience with cloud-based infrastructure (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Experience with a strongly-typed language (e.g., TypeScript, Java, Go).

Hiring process

Our hiring process is designed to be as practical and respectful of your time as possible. We don't believe in white boarding or trivia, we want to see how you code in an environment as similar as possible to your day job. We also believe in a collaborative approach to the interview process, so you'll have the chance to meet members of our team and get a feel for our culture.
