End a supervision relationship
Updated August 31, 2026
Who can use this
This flow is for supervisors ending an active independent or employer-sponsored supervision relationship.
Before you end the relationship
Review your state board's regulations first, so you understand its requirements and its timeline for ending a supervisory relationship.
Except in rare circumstances, Motivo asks for 30 days' notice to the supervisee, and to the Motivo account manager for employer-sponsored supervision, before you end the relationship. The notice gives Motivo time to prepare the supervisee and the employer and to arrange a new match. Motivo's 30-day expectation may differ from your board's requirement. Follow both.
For an employer-sponsored supervisee, always notify the account manager before you remove them. Do not remove someone only because they have been unresponsive. Contact the account manager first.
For an independent supervisee, you can remove the relationship once you have communicated with the supervisee and confirmed that verification forms and any other paperwork are submitted.
Complete every procedure your board requires for termination, including state documentation and board paperwork, and validate the clinical and supervision hours the supervisee needs for their licensure application.
For help clarifying board regulations related to ending supervision, contact support@motivohealth.com before you submit the removal.
End the relationship
- Open Supervisees and find the supervisee under Active.
- Open the supervisee's action menu and select Remove supervisee.
- Read the warning about future sessions.
- Choose a Reason. Complete Please explain when the selected reason requires more detail.
- Enter the supervisee's full name in Supervisee full name.
- For an employer-sponsored supervisee who still needs supervision, select the option asking Motivo to find them a new supervisor. This option is unavailable when the reason shows that supervision requirements are complete.
- Select the acknowledgement confirming that you communicated with the supervisee and, for employer-sponsored supervision, the Motivo account manager.
- Select Yes, unmatch to confirm the action.
Ending the relationship cancels all future sessions between you and the supervisee. You will not be able to book another session in that relationship.
What happens next
The supervisee moves to your Inactive list, where you can still review the relationship information and prior sessions. For employer-sponsored supervision, the employer or Motivo can arrange another supervisor when needed.
Your shared conversation becomes read-only after Motivo processes the relationship change. Earlier messages remain available, but neither person can send new messages in that conversation.
This action cannot be reversed from your account. If you ended the relationship by mistake, contact support@motivohealth.com. Do not create duplicate sessions or a second account while the relationship is inactive.
Ending a relationship is different from cancelling one meeting. Use Cancel session when supervision will continue and only a scheduled meeting needs to be cancelled.
