Supervisor Spotlight: Karen Stewart

Karen Stewart, LCSW, CAC, is a mental health specialist, mentor and supervisor specializing in the field of humanitarian aid. A unique voice in the field, Karen began her career as a certified addiction counselor, focused on helping those with substance use disorders. She spent time in a variety of settings, working with a variety of populations: from community mental health to residential facilities; inpatient and out;  assisting individuals and groups, including those with severe and persistent mental illness to providing psychiatric emergency work. Additionally, she spent over 15 years working as a mental health professional for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

Today, Karen specializes in mentoring and supervising mental health professionals who are considering humanitarian work abroad, currently engaged in humanitarian work abroad or who will be returning to the United States and in need of a supervisor who understands the delicate nature of re-entry.
