From Our Founder

Hi, friends!

This morning, our hearts are with those who experienced the terrible storms in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee this past weekend.  If you are looking for a way to help, check out this opportunity from our friends at Kentucky Counseling Center, who are collecting donations that will be distributed to Graves County school counselors, social workers, and youth service centers who can identify students in need. 💙

Today, I have some exciting news to share with you…

I’ve decided to name our CTO (Chief Technology Officer), Mike Chen as a Co-Founder of Motivo.

Since Motivo is a few years old, it might seem odd that we are naming a Co-Founder at this stage, so I’d love to share a bit of background…

A few years ago, I created Motivo’s pilot product using Shopify and Zoom. Some of you likely remember those early days of sharing your profile information with my college friend, Julie, her uploading all of it for you, and then us manually matching people through a straight-up google spreadsheet. 😳

It was enough to get our little “engine that could” off the ground, but it wasn’t sustainable as we grew.

As a therapist-turned-founder, I have always been strong in the area of culture-building, empathy, and a deep desire to solve a problem for our industry. What I lacked was the technical background to build a software product.

If you are wondering why some of our processes have been slow and manual in the past it’s because they were, ahem, built by a therapist. 🙈

In 2020, I hired an incredible woman, Sarah Louragh, to serve as Motivo’s Chief Operating Officer. You likely haven’t met Sarah as she works behind the scenes at Motivo, but she is the structure and stability that powers much of what happens here.

Previously, Sarah led an operations team at Airbnb, and worked closely with a senior software engineer named, Mike Chen. In late 2020, she recruited him to join us.

Over the past year, Mike and his talented team of engineers, have completely rebuilt Motivo’s product, bolstered our product infrastructure, and provided our team with the tools and features needed to grow.

However, Mike is more than just a highly-skilled engineer.

Mike has been delivering co-founder-level value from his first day at Motivo. He shares my vision of solving the shortage of mental health providers in our world. He wants to leave this earth better than we found it. He is completely obsessed with serving our Motivo community. And he fiercely advocates for what’s best for our employees and contractors.

A few other things you might like to know about Mike:

  • He lives in Redwood City, CA, but grew up in Boston.
  • He and his wife, Jessie, grew up in neighboring towns and had a huge overlap in friend groups, but never met until after college.
  • He has an adorable 10-month-old son, Liam. When Mike uploads a new video of Liam for the team, all operations stop so we can watch it.
  • He loves Boba milk tea.
  • His hidden talent is breakdancing.
  • He’s an incredible listener.

One other thing I’d like you to know about Mike – and this actually goes for every member of our team – they think about all of you, a lot.

Somehow, we’ve been able to build a team that is cheering for your success more than you could ever imagine.  Mike views his role as working for all of you – building a product that you love to use and that helps you do your best work.

I couldn’t be more grateful for Mike, Sarah, and the entire team of Motivo who care deeply about making clinical supervision more accessible. Thank you for allowing me to introduce Mike to you today.

If you want to drop Mike a quick word of congrats, I know he would love it – you can reach him at mike@motivohealth.com

Warmly,

Rachel
